The lacing in this fun Christmas craft not only makes a colorful decoration to the Christmas tree but it’s also an amazing fine motor activity for kids. We left our fine motor Christmas trees with lacing as the decoration but you could also add some pom-poms or sequins for additional decorations on your trees.

How to Make a Fine Motor Christmas Tree Craft

Supplies:

• fine motor Christmas tree craft template <—-Get the TEMPLATE HERE
• green cardstock
• red cardstock
• multi-colored yarn
• glitter star stickers
• jumbo craft stick
• hole punch
• tape
• scissors
• glue stick

Instructions:

1. Download and print out the fine motor Christmas tree template. Print out the Christmas trees on green cardstock and the pot on red cardstock (or the color of your choice). Use your scissors to cut out the pieces of the template.

2. Place a jumbo craft stick at the bottom of one of the Christmas tree template pieces and use tape to secure it in place.

3. Use a glue stick to add glue all over the Christmas tree and on top of the jumbo craft stick. Then place the other Christmas tree template piece on top of the glue, lining it up with the Christmas tree.

4. Grab your hole punch and punch holes around the outside perimeter of the Christmas tree.

5. Cut off a length of multi-colored yarn that is 2-3 feet long. Tape one end of the yarn on the back of your Christmas tree at the bottom. Then lace the yarn through the different holes on the tree to decorate your Christmas tree.

Kids get so much benefit from fine motor activities like this fine motor Christmas tree craft. Pinching the yarn and using their finger muscles to work the yarn through the different holes of the tree is a fabulous way for kids to strengthen their fine motor muscles and to work on their hand to eye coordination skills.

6. After lacing through all of the holes up the Christmas tree, tape the yarn on the back of the Christmas tree and cut off any excess yarn.

7. Peel the backing off one of your glitter star stickers and place it at the top of your Christmas tree. Turn the tree over and add a second star sticker on the back of the Christmas tree, lining it up with the first sticker.

8. Place one of the red pots underneath the jumbo craft stick at the bottom of your Christmas tree. Secure it in place with some tape.

9. Add glue around the red pot and on top of the craft stick. Then line up and place the second pot on top of the glue.

Your fine motor Christmas Tree craft is complete

Kids can use their creativity to lace the yarn around their tree any way they want. This makes the craft look different for everyone. Kids might like to make straight laces across their tree like the one pictured below, or they might like going through the holes several different times to make crosses all over their tree.

Some Helpful Tips

Elementary age children can easily create this craft all on their own but toddlers and preschoolers will need some assistance. For youngsters, it might be helpful to put together the Christmas trees for them. Then tape the yarn on the back of the tree and have it all ready for them to practice their lacing skills.

Prepping the Christmas trees might also be a good idea if you want to make this craft as part of a classroom Christmas party. Add the children’s names on the red pots and you have a perfect Christmas party fine motor activity.
