It’s a gathering of droid generations, as BB-8 from the sequel trilogy meets the legendary R2-D2.
BB-8 was named because of its resemblance to both the letter B and the number 8. His voice was similar to R2’s, and it was created by digitally altering the voices of comedic actors Ben Schwartz and Bill Hader.

R2-D2 has the power to project images, such as Princess Leia’s plea for help to Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Portraying R2-D2 was quite complicated and required several models. Only two models were used for the first film: one that was controlled remotely and one that could fit actor Kenny Baker.
By the next film, things got even more complex as eight models were needed for various scenes. In the prequels, R2-D2 was created with a mix of practical effects and CGI imagery.
