The friendship between Arnold and Gerald is one that fans have come to cherish! The children in the show were mostly voiced by actual kids, something unusual in animation.

Arnold went through five voice actors throughout the series, as their voices would start to get too deep.

Gerald had the same voice actor throughout the show, and his changing voice was explained in the show as being due to having his tonsils removed.

He existed before the show, as Craig Bartlett created him as a claymation character for the Pee-wee’s Playhouse TV show.

He would later decide to use the character for his own show, but decided to go with traditional 2D animation instead of claymation.

There was a running gag in the show where fans never got to know his last name. Any time it was close to being revealed, something weird would happen to prevent it.

However, his last name was hidden in plain sight! His grandpa always called him Shortman, and while many fans assumed it was a nickname, Craig Bartlett revealed this was his surname.
