Michael Bond was inspired to create Paddington after he saw a lone stuffed bear in a shop on Christmas Eve. After buying the bear for his wife, he decided to write a story about the bear.

Paddington got his name because the Browns found him alone at Paddington Station. Because he had no name, naming after the station was the next best thing!

Michael Bond chose Paddington Station as he lived close to it at the time that he came up with the idea.

Initially, Michael Bond had the idea to have Paddington come from Africa originally, but he was told that there are no bears in Africa. Because of that, he changed the origin to Peru instead.

In the live-action films, Paddington was going to be voiced by Colin Firth. However, it was decided by the producers and Colin himself that he wasn’t the right fit, so the role went to Ben Whishaw instead.

In 1972, a couple named Eddie and Shirley Clarkson were creating stuffed Paddington toys that became quite popular.

Michael Bond’s lawyers were going to sue the couple for copyright infringement, but Michael and Eddie met in a lift before the lawsuit, and after a conversation, Michael decided to give them the right to make official bears.

This couple were also the parents of famous TV personality Jeremy Clarkson.
