The type of mustache can have many different connotations, from making you look like a dastardly villain or maybe a lumberjack depending on how it looks.
It is also a common sign of a sophisticated gentleman. While we’ve all seen many mustaches both on people’s faces and on lots of products, it’s not always easy to learn how to draw a mustache.
This guide aims to fix this problem and show you how easy it can be!
We hope that you enjoy this step-by-step guide on how to draw a mustache in just 6 easy steps!
How to Draw A Mustache – Let’s Get Started!
Step 1
To get this guide on how to draw a mustache started, we will begin with the curly part on the left-hand side of the mustache.
To do this, you can start off with a thick, curved line starting from the center of the mustache. Then, you can use lots of smaller curved lines to the left of it to create the top of that left-hand curl.
This may sound complicated, but once you see how it looks in the reference image it should all become very clear! Once you’re happy with how it looks, you’re then ready for the second step!
Step 2 – Draw the bottom of the left-hand side of the mustache
Now that you have the top of the side of your mustache drawing complete, you can add the bottom of this side in this step.
Instead of using a solid line as you did for the top, you can use lots of smaller curved lines. As you can see in the reference image, it will be bulging out a bit at the bottom of this area.
Step 3 – Now, finish off the left-hand side of the mustache
For this part of our guide on how to draw a mustache, you can now finish off the left-hand side of the mustache.
You will continue what you started in the previous step by drawing lots of smaller curved lines to have it looking as it does in our reference picture.
This effect will help to make the mustache look big and bushy!
Step 4 – Draw the right-hand side of the mustache
You’ve been doing a great job on this mustache drawing so far, and in this step you will be mirroring some of what you did in the previous steps.
For this step, you can draw the top and bottom of the right-hand side of the mustache in exactly the same way that you did for the left-hand side.
You can then also add some more detail to the left curl of the mustache. That will leave just a few more details to add before you reach the final step.
Step 5 – Now, you can add some final details for your mustache
It’s time to move on to the final details and touches of this guide on how to draw a mustache!
To finish off the detailing of the mustache, you can simply add in some more curved lines on the right-hand curl of the mustache.
Once again, this will pretty much be mirroring what you did on the left-hand side.
Then, once you have these last details drawn your picture is pretty much complete! You can move on to the next step if you’re ready, but you can also add some more of your own before that.
You could try out various ideas such as changing up the style of the mustache or creating a background for it. If you’re feeling extra creative then you could draw a face for the mustache to be on.
You could also incorporate more mustaches to create a mustache pattern. These are just a few ideas you could try, so let your creativity flow and see what happens!
Step 6 – Finish off your mustache drawing with some color
For this sixth and final step of your mustache drawing you can have some fun finishing it off with some brilliant colors!
For our reference image, we kept it more muted by using some dark grey and black for the mustache. This is just one approach you could take, however, and you have many different options at your disposal!
Hair can come in many different colors, which gives you a wide variety you can choose from to color in.
You could even use some brighter, less realistic colors to finish it off for a more stylistic look.
Once you have decided how you will color this drawing, you can also have fun choosing which art mediums and tools you will use for it.
If you would like to replicate the more subdued look of our reference image, then you could use something like watercolors or colored pencils. These mediums would ensure that you would be able to see the lines that you drew.
Alternatively, you could use some paints, colored pens or markers for more striking, vibrant colors. It’s completely up to you, so what do you think you will use to finish off your drawing?
3 More tips to make your mustache drawing easy!
Trim away all difficulty with this mustache sketch as we show you some helpful tips!
For this mustache drawing, we created quite a detailed version of one. This looks great, but you could also take away some of that detail to make it easier.
One way to do this would be to use a solid outline for the mustache instead of having lots of smaller texture lines. You could still add the texture details inside of the outline, but it will still make it easier.
This is one example, but you should feel free to change the design in any way that makes it easier for you.
Another way to make this easy to draw mustache even easier is by changing the style of the mustache. Mustaches can be fashioned into all kinds of different styles, and you may find one of those easier to draw.
For instance, you could have a thin pencil mustache, a sharp and pointy villain mustache or maybe a big handlebar mustache. These are just a few examples, and they show off the different styles that they can come in.
If you want some inspiration, you can look up pictures of mustaches online to help you out. You may be surprised just how many variations of mustaches there are in the world!
What style would you find easiest to draw?
Lastly, you can make this drawing of a mustache easier by using specific art tools and mediums. We spoke about the texture details in an earlier tip and touched on how it can be difficult to draw.
One way of keeping these details while making it easier would be by using a paintbrush. By using one with a small tip and using lots of small strokes, you can easily create this texture.
Otherwise, you could use colored pens, pencils or other such mediums to create these small strokes. It can all come down to experimenting to find what works best!
Don’t be afraid of having a few failed attempts as you create your own ideal mustache sketch.
