So prepare for some adorable drawing fun as we begin this step-by-step guide on how to draw a cartoon squirrel in just 6 fun and easy steps!
How to Draw A Cartoon Squirrel – Let’s Get Started!
Step 1
We will be creating quite a lot of your cartoon squirrel drawing in this first step of the guide! It may seem a bit overwhelming, but we will take it slowly to make sure you don’t get lost.
You’ll see in later steps of the guide that the squirrel’s head is separated into two sections, and we will draw the lower section now.
This will be drawn with some curved lines that have pointy tips worked into them to make this section look furrier.
We will then draw the arm of the squirrel, and this will be long and thin with some rounded fingers at the end. This hand will be holding something later, but we will get to that soon!
Then, the body will also be quite rounded, and the legs and chest will have some pointy sections to also make them furry. Add some large flat feet to the base, and then we can continue!
Step 2 – Now, draw the top of the head
You drew the bottom half of the face in the previous step of our guide on how to draw a cartoon squirrel, and in this one we will draw the top half.
You can start this by drawing two large, oval-shaped eyes connected to one another. These will then have curved lines above for the eyebrows.
Next, we will add two rounded ears on top of the head outline. Finally, finish off by drawing a small angular nose on the lower section of the head.
Step 3 – Next, draw the tail and acorn
Squirrels love acorns, everyone knows this and that is why we will be giving one to this squirrel! The acorn has a rounded cap on top of it, and you can add a small, rounded stem on top of this.
The bottom half will be drawn using another curved line that culminates in a pointy tip.
Then, we will add the tail of the squirrel. A squirrel’s tail is usually really large compared to the rest of its body, and that is true here!
Much like with other parts of the squirrel, the tail will be drawn using a combination of curved and rounded lines with pointy tips to make it look nice and furry.
Step 4 – Now, draw some details on the tail and acorn
Now it’s time to add some smaller details to the tail and the acorn of this cartoon squirrel drawing. We shall begin with the acorn.
For the cap of the acorn, we will draw lots of smaller curved lines connecting to one another to give it a bit of a scaled look.
Then, for the bottom half we will add a series of simple, slightly curved lines to give it some texture. To finish off this step, we will draw a section onto the tail.
You will then be ready for some final details and elements in the next step of the guide!
Step 5 – Add the final details to your drawing
This step of our guide on how to draw a cartoon squirrel will be focused on adding some final details and elements to get you ready for the final step of the guide.
These final details will focus mainly on the face of the squirrel, and we will start simply. For the eyes, we will add a large dot inside of each one for the pupils.
Then, we added some curved lines coming down from the nose for the open, smiling mouth. For a final detail, we added the squared buckteeth that are common for squirrels to have!
Once you have added these final details, you can finish off with some details of your own! You could draw a background or even add another squirrel pal for a few ideas, but what can you think of?
Bonus: Add Some Humor And Story To This Drawing
The design that we created together in this guide on how to draw a cartoon squirrel has so much personality and quirk! He looks like he could star in his own cartoon or comic strip.
While in the guide we focused on the character itself, we thought it would be fun to show a few ways you could have this squirrel star in his own comic or cartoon.
Because of how the design looks, we think giving your portrayal a humorous edge would be a good idea. One way of doing it would be to turn this drawing into a comic panel.
If you can think of a joke, especially one that is squirrel related, then you could write it on the page and draw a speech bubble around it. If you’re feeling especially ambitious, then you could draw multiple panels.
This way, you could change the pose and face in each panel in order to make a longer story. If you would like to try something advanced, you could also make a flip book.
You can buy little mini notepads or cut out lots of small strips of paper and then staple them together. Once you have these papers, you can then draw the squirrel on each one.
On each page, you can slightly change the details of the design in a sequential way, and that way you can make it look like the squirrel is animated when you flip the pages.
For something a bit easier, it could also be fun to draw this cartoon squirrel on a large piece of paper with some text and turn it into a cool poster! What other ideas do you have that could take this cartoon squirrel drawing to new levels?
Step 6 – Finish off your drawing with color
You’re now ready to finish off this picture with some colors, and this is where you can really take over and show off what you can do!
We showed you the colors we would choose for this image in our example image, but they are a suggestion.
You could go for similar browns and beige colors to the ones we used, but you should definitely feel free to go for any other colors you may prefer.
This is also a great chance for you to play around with your favorite art tools and mediums, so we hope you have a great time finishing it off!
