The heart is one of the most important organs in a living being’s body, as it helps to keep blood flowing and ultimately helps to keep us alive!
Symbolically, it is also important in many cultures, as it has come to represent emotions and love, even though those are technically from the brain.
Because of these associations, many like to learn how to draw a cartoon heart so that they can represent this famous organ.
In this guide, we will be working on a cartoon version of a realistic portrayal of the heart, and these steps will make it fun and easy for you to master.
So get ready to create an awesome artwork featuring this organ as we begin this step-by-step guide on how to draw a cartoon heart in just 6 easy steps!
How to Draw A Cartoon Heart – Let’s Get Started!
Step 1
The heart is made up of many small, complex parts, and that can make creating a cartoon heart drawing a challenge even when it is in a simplified cartoon style.
In this first step of the guide, we will focus on the main ‘body’ of the heart. As you can see in our reference image, this body of the heart will be separated into three sections.
These sections all have names, but we won’t focus on that in order to keep things simple.
The bottom section will be the largest, and it is drawn using some rounded lines that culminate in a curved tip. This section will be entirely separate from the others.
There will then be another fairly large section above this, but it will have a considerable gap at the top that we will fill in later.
Finally, there will be a third smaller section drawn with a simple curved line on the left.
That’s all for now, so let’s move on!
Step 2 – Now, draw more sections of the heart
We will be adding some slightly more complex sections to the image in this step of our guide on how to draw a cartoon heart. This is certainly a step you may want to take slowly!
Hearts have pipe-like structures attached to them called aortas, and we will be adding some of these now.
First, we will add a large one of these aortae coming up from the bump at the top of the bottom section.
This one will be the largest one on the heart, drawn with curved lines with a small, thin oval at the end.
Then, there will be another rounded section on top that has several smaller ones poking off. They will be drawn similarly, but will be a bit more squared in shape.
Step 3 – Next, draw more aortae and add some details
Continuing on, we will be adding some more aortae to the heart along with some extra details for the ones that are already there.
First, we will add two more small aortae on either side of the heart for a total of four in this step.
Once drawn, we will then add some simple curved lines onto some of the new ones along with the ones from previous steps.
It’s as easy as that, and then we can continue.
Step 4 – Now, draw some finer details
Before we get to some final details in the next step of this cartoon heart drawing, we will first add some smaller details now.
These will specifically go onto the main, central aorta that comes up from the center of the heart.
Simply add some short, curved lines coming in from the sides, and then add some wavier lines on the upper edges of this aorta.
Then, we will move on to those final details in the next step, so when you’re ready let’s move on!
Step 5 – Add the final details to your drawing
Now you’re ready to add some final touches in this fifth step of our guide on how to draw a cartoon heart.
The main detail we will be adding here will be some veins on the surface of the heart. These can actually be a bit tricky to draw, but once you get the hang of it then it becomes much easier!
Try to think of each clump of veins as a tree branch. There is a central line that has many other smaller ones that branch out into even smaller ones coming off of them.
Some will be a bit larger than others, but you can play around with these to suit your own design tastes.
Once drawn, you can then add any final touches or background details to finish off this artwork!
Step 6 – Finish off your drawing with color
You’ve worked hard on this drawing, and now you can have some fun coloring in your creation. In our reference image, we went with a fairly realistic set of colors for the heart.
We used some light reds and even lighter pinks for most of the sections of the heart, and then we went with some blues for some of the aortae.
By varying up the shades of these colors, you can create a more dynamic look for the heart’s surfaces that look more textured and realistic.
You could use similar colors for your own drawing if you like how it looks, but you could also use some more stylistic colors if you prefer!
Bonus: Add More Ideas To Your Cartoon Heart Drawing!
This drawing of a cartoon heart is all done and looking great, but you may not be ready to finish the fun. If you would like to keep it going, then there are a few ways to keep the fun going.
We also have another section after this for ways to make this drawing easier if you’ve struggled with it. For now, let’s think of some ways that you could add to this drawing.
One way that you could add to it would be to surround it with the organs that would be surrounding it. This would require a bit of research, but it would be fun and educational!
If you would like to keep the ficus on the cartoon heart, then maybe you could look up the different names of the sections of a heart. Then, you could draw some lines from these parts and add some labels.
This would be another way to make this drawing a bit more educational, too. There are some other ways you could have fun with this drawing, and one would be to turn it into a card.
We use hearts on Valentine’s Day and other days to express love, but they usually look different to a real heart. It could be fun to use this more realistic drawing of a cartoon heart on a Valentine’s Day card!
It would be a fun twist on the usual format, but you should probably save it for someone who will see the funny side and not be grossed out. These are a few of the ways you can add to this drawing of a cartoon heart.
Can you think of any other ways you could add your own fun details and ideas to this drawing?
3 More tips to make your cartoon heart drawing easy!
Beat any challenges involved in this cartoon heart sketch with these 3 tips!
This drawing of a cartoon heart is simple and yet rather detailed at the same time. These details could be quite challenging to draw, so you could simplify the design even more if you need to.
There are a few ways that you could do this, and you could do it by focusing on any aspects you are struggling with specifically.
This could be anything from removing some texture details to simplifying the smaller parts of the cartoon heart.
It all depends on you, and you can always make later attempts that include more of these lost details once you feel more confident with the design.
Another good way to make this cartoon heart drawing easier would be by consulting other drawings and diagrams. You can find diagrams of hearts online or in biology textbooks.
Many of these will even have the various parts of the heart labeled. If so, you could make your own drawing more educational by adding these various labels.
The more sources you can use with our reference images, the more you will find that drawing the finer details will become much easier.
Using these additional sources could also allow you to make it even more detailed.
They could even allow you to add some of the surrounding organs of the heart!
Finally, we think you could make this cartoon heart sketch easier by incorporating it into a larger design. This may sound like a way to make the drawing harder, but you may be surprised!
For example, you could incorporate the heart into a quirky Valentine’s card.
When we see hearts on Valentine’s cards, they are usually a simple red shape, but this would be an amusing take on the traditional love heart.
If you were to do this, the cartoon heart could be in a shape on some folded cardboard, and there could be some text on the card.
This would mean the cartoon heart wouldn’t need to be as detailed!
Your Cartoon Heart Drawing is Complete!
There were some tricky parts in this guide on how to draw a cartoon heart, but we hope that by following the steps you found it to be an easier experience than you may have suspected it could be.
