Some people believe that they bring bad luck or that they are a bad omen that is a sign of bad times to come.
In reality, black cats are actually a rather beautiful type of cat that don’t deserve their sinister reputation!
While some fear them, many others love these mysterious felines. For fans of this kind of cat, learning how to draw a black cat is a great way to create some wonderful artwork featuring them.
If you love these cats (or are maybe a bit scared but fascinated by them) then this should be a fun tutorial for you!
Our step-by-step guide on how to draw a black cat will show you how you can represent one of these beautiful creatures.
How to Draw A Black Cat – Let’s Get Started!
Step 1
This is the first step of this guide on how to draw a black cat, and in it we shall begin with the head and neck of the cat.
The face will be seen at a side profile, and you can use some curved lines for the top, front and base of the head.
Then, use a small shape for the little nose at the front of the face and then draw a line in for the mouth.
Then, draw a small eye and add some lines poking out from it for that signature feline look. Finish off with the pointy ears on top of the head, and then you can move on to step 2 of the guide!
Step 2 – Now, draw the back and chest of the cat
To continue this black cat drawing, we will be drawing the back and the chest for it in this next step.
The back is quite simple, and it can be drawn with a simple curved line extending back from the base of the head.
The chest will be drawn using a much bumpier line to make it look furrier, and there will be lots of smaller line details drawn near to it as well.
Then, it will be time for step 3 of the guide!
Step 3 – Draw the front legs for the cat
This cat is sitting down in a relaxed position, and we will further emphasize this as we draw the front legs in this step of our guide on how to draw a black cat.
Use an angular curved line for the back of these front legs, and then use a shorter set of lines for the front parts of the legs.
We will also add some small lines around these legs to add some more of that fur texture detail.
Step 4 – Next, draw a tail for this black cat
This elegant cat needs a tail, and this is one of the elements that we will be adding in this next step of your black cat drawing!
The tail will extend inward from the back of the cat’s body, and it will be raised up a bit as if the cat is flicking it.
When drawing it, we will keep the linework a bit irregular and jagged to make the tail look fluffier.
Once you have drawn the tail, the next thing we will draw will be the belly for the cat. This will be made to look furry as well by using lots of smaller lines connecting to one another.
Then it will be on to the final details in the next step of the guide!
Step 5 – Add the final details to your black cat drawing
This step of our guide on how to draw a black cat will see you finishing up with some final details before you color it in.
First, finish off the outline by drawing the long back feet resting against the ground. Once the outline is complete, we will then be drawing some texture details.
To do this, simply add some small clumps of short lines all throughout the body of the cat to make it look furrier.
When you have added all of these details, you will be ready for the final step! Before you proceed, be sure to also add any additional elements you may want.

Step 6 – Finish off your black cat drawing with color
When coloring this black cat drawing, you may think that you may not have many options for how you can color it in.
This doesn’t have to be the case, however! In our example image, we did keep to a black color scheme, but we added some highlights of lighter greys to add a bit more variation to the image.
You could go for a similar approach, but if you would like a different kind of cat then you could also change up the colors as you wish!
Choosing the colors is just a part of it, however, as you can also have some fun with the art mediums and tools that you use.
Experimenting with different paints, pens and other mediums can be a great way to get some amazing variation. How will you color this image?
