How to Draw A Cartoon Sun – Let’s Get Started!
Step 1
To begin this cartoon sun drawing, we will begin with a circle.
This circle should be as smooth and perfect as possible, and you could use a tool such as a drawing compass to easily draw this perfect circle.
If you don’t have one, then you could trace around a flat round object, or you could carefully try to draw it free-hand.
Once it’s drawn, we will then add some rays around the sun using some rounded lines with pointy tips at the ends. That’s all for this first step, and then we can proceed!
Step 2 – Now, draw some more rays around the sun
You added the first rays in the first step of this guide on how to draw a cartoon sun, and in this one we will add a few more.
We drew three of these rays in the previous part, and now we will add three more. The first one will be a small one that connects to the one that is furthest to the right from the first step.
Then, we will finish off this step by adding three more at the bottom left-hand corner. These rays will all be drawn using the same curved lines that culminate in pointy tips.
Step 3 – Next, add the next lot of rays
Now, we will be adding four more rays to the outline of this cartoon sun. These ones will go on the upper left-hand side of the sun, and we will be adding four more.
You can draw these rays in different shapes and sizes, but if you wish to replicate ours then the first one on the left will be a separate ray.
The second one will be as well, and then the final two will be connected in the middle.
We can then finish off the final rays in the next step!
Step 4 – Now, draw the final rays
It’s time to add the final rays to your cartoon sun drawing in this fourth step. There is one final gap, and we will fill it with three more curved, pointy rays.
Two of these will also be connected at the middle, and the final one will be its own separate one.
With these rays drawn, we can begin drawing some final details and fun elements in the next step of the guide!
Step 5 – Add the final details to your drawing
In this fifth part of our guide on how to draw a cartoon sun, we will be adding some fun facial details to the sun!
First, draw an oval shape for the eye on the right, and then connect another oval onto the left-hand side of it.
There will then be smaller ovals inside these eye outlines, and these will have some small black shapes inside for the pupils.
Above the eyes, we will then draw some small curved shapes for the eyebrows.
Next, you can use a curved line for the smiling mouth, and there will be a smaller curved line at the corner.
Next, you can draw some more curved lines for the open mouth beneath that. This will have some teeth and tongue details drawn inside as well.
These are the details we created for this cartoon sun, but you could add some of your own as well!
Maybe you could draw a space background with some planets and stars to go with this sun. What fun ideas do you have for this one?
Step 6 – Finish off your drawing with color
This final step of our guide will be focused on bringing some amazing colors to your cartoon sun! As you can see in our reference image, we used some stunning bright shades of yellows for the sun.
This makes the sun have a lovely warm feeling that matches the one given off by its real-life counterpart!
To shake things up a bit, we also used some blues for the eyes and then some reds and pinks for the inside of the mouth.
We would recommend some bright art tools and mediums such as colored markers and pens if you want t bright look for the sun.
There are so many other colors and mediums you could use as well, so let your creativity take over and see what happens!
Bonus: Make This Cartoon Sun Drawing Even Better With Fun Crafts!
You’ve made it through all of the steps in this guide on how to draw a cartoon sun, and now you may be wondering what more can be done with the drawing.
We have a few more ideas to share after this, but for now we wanted to focus on some ways you can color your drawing. There are many different ways to go about it, and we only scratched the surface in the guide.
There are many classic mediums and art tools that you can use, and we even covered a few of them in the guide. However, there are also some more unconventional tools and craft materials that you can use.
For example, you may have made your cartoon sun nice and bright with yellows, reds and oranges, and it could look amazing as is. However, you can also add some crafts to take it further.
A light sprinkling of glitter would make it look like the sun is sparkling and twinkling. You could also perhaps cut out some construction paper to form the jagged rays of the sun to stick down.
These are just some simple ideas, but you can really think outside the box. Another idea would be to cut out the sun outline and then use some transparent craft sheets to make the edges of the sun see-through.
If you added other details such as the moon, then you could use some glow in the dark paint to make it shine and contrast even further from the rest of the image!
These are a few of the crafts that you could use for this picture, but now we would like to know what other fun crafts and art supplies you can think of.
