My kids saw Disney’s Big Hero 6 in theater with their Grandma and ever since they have raved about how much they love the movie and how smitten they are with the Baymax character. As soon as I learned about the DVD release date I ran to Target to get myself a copy of it because I’ve been so excited to plan a fun family movie night with the movie.

When we plan a family movie night, I love extending the evening with a fun craft or activity to go along with the movie. I love the way I am able to bond and laugh with my kids in those extra moments. Today I’m excited to share how we made our Big Hero 6 movie night extra special with our Baymax Stick Puppets and marshmallow Baymax characters. I hope it leaves you inspired to plan a Big Hero 6 movie night with your family. You can purchase your own DVD or Blu-Ray copy at Target like I did in the electronics department, or look for a special display at the front of the store.

Before watching the movie we used marshmallows, toothpicks and black cake decorating gel to make our own Baymax characters for a special treat. We used extra large campfire marshmallows and medium sized marshmallows (some cut in half) to make our Baymax. I also cut some of our toothpicks in half and some of the sharp ends off to make them more child-friendly.

My kids had as much fun with this activity as I imagined they would. My 4 year old decided to do some experimenting and discovered that if you lick one side of the marshmallow it easily sticks to another marshmallow, so that is another great way for little ones to easily create their Baymax character.

How to Make a Baymax Stick Puppet (no armor)

After watching the movie we made stick puppets replicating our favorite character, Baymax. Smaller children will have an easier time making him without his armor on, but older children can easily create him with his armor and wings on and pretend to fly him around in the air.

Supplies you will need:

  • 1 regular sized white cupcake liner
  • 1 mini white cupcake liner
  • white cardstock paper
  • large wood craft stick
  • black marker
  • scissors
  • glue stick
  • tacky glue
Directions:
1. Start by gluing your cupcake liners on your white cardstock paper, layering the mini liner at the top of the large cupcake liner. Cut your cupcake liners out and you have your Baymax head and body.
2. Cut out arms and the circle over his heart out from your additional white cardstock paper. Glue them onto your Baymax body.
3. Use your black marker to draw the eyes and straight line between them on your Baymax face.
4. Finish your puppet by adding a generous amount of tacky glue to half of your wood craft stick and glue it to the back of your Baymax.
How to Make a Baymax Stick Puppet (with armor)
Supplies you will need:
  • 1 regular size red cupcake liner
  • 1 mini red cupcake liner
  • red, purple and white cardstock paper
  • large wood craft stick
  • black marker
  • scissors
  • glue stick
  • tacky glue
Directions:
1. Start by gluing your red cupcake liners onto your red cardstock paper, layering the small liner at the top of the large cupcake liner. Cut your cupcake liners out and you now have your Baymax head and body.
2. Now you’ll need to cut several pieces for your puppet out of your red, purple and white cardstock paper. From red cut out 2 armored arms, 2 wings, the 2 pieces at the top of the helmet and a red circle to cover the heart. From the purple cut out his stomach armor piece and 2 oval pieces for each arm. From the white cardstock paper cut out the Baymax face showing through the helmet.
3. Glue all the pieces onto your Baymax. Also, use your black marker to draw eyes on Baymax and color in the hands on the armor.
4. Finish your puppet by adding a generous amount of tacky glue to half of your wood craft stick and glue it to the back of your Baymax.
My kids have loved pretend play with their Baymax puppets, and we’ve already watched Big Hero 6 several times since we purchased it. How does your family like to spend quality time together?
