In modern times, we look back at various mythologies and legends as some incredible stories that are filled with incredible larger-than-life characters.
In ancient times, these were more than just stories and characters, and they were a huge part of life for the people that believed in them.
In ancient Greece, gods were incredibly important, and Athena was one of the most revered.
Associated with traits like warfare, wisdom and protection, she was highly celebrated, and learning how to draw Athena is a great way to show some modern appreciation for her!

How to Draw Athena – Let’s Get Started!
Step 1
We mentioned in the introduction to this guide on how to draw Athena that this is quite a detailed drawing, but as long as you follow all the steps you’ll definitely be able to do it! With that in mind, we shall start this guide by drawing her head and face.
First, we will start with the war helmet that she is wearing.
We will be using a curved line for the visor that sits above her eyes. This will have some circles on the right-hand end, and then a strap will drop down from that.
You can then finish off this step by drawing the top of the helmet, and then draw the outline of her face with some facial features. Then you’re ready for step 2 of the guide!
Step 2 – Now, draw the start of her hair
To create a more dramatic and striking Athena drawing, we will be giving her a lot of hair that will be flowing around her head.
This section may look complicated but it doesn’t have to be too difficult to do!
To draw this hair, we will be using lots of curved, wavy lines around the helmet and the head to create the various sections of it.
That’s all there is to it for this step, and then we’re ready for the next part!
Step 3 – Draw her hand, spear tip and other elements
We will be adding quite a lot in this next step of our guide on how to draw Athena. First, we will be drawing her first hand next to her head.
This will be holding on to a spear, and the spear will have a large and pointy tip at the end of it.
Then, we will be drawing another large loop of her hair. This can be done by drawing some circular lines behind her head.
The final thing we will be drawing in this step will be an owl’s wing on the right-hand side of Athena. You can draw this outline with a curved line and then add the feather details within it to finish it off.
Step 4 – Next, draw the rest of the owl and more hair
You started drawing an owl in the previous part of your Athena drawing, and we will finish it in this next step.
Owls are often associated with Athena, and you can finish it off by drawing the head with some facial details within.
The other wing will be lowered, and it will be positioned to make it look as if it is sitting on her shoulder.
Once that owl is drawn, we will then be adding some more locks of curly hair extending from near her shoulder on the left side. Then you will be ready for some final details in the next step!
Step 5 – Add the final details to your Athena drawing
This step of our guide on how to draw Athena will see you adding the final details and elements to finish it off.
First, start by adding some simple line details to the visor of her helmet to give it it more definition.
The final aspect of the drawing will then be to draw some looping fabric for the garment that she is wearing.
This will be drawn with some curved and rounded lines below her neck, and then you’ll be ready for the final step!
Before you move on, you should also feel free to add any extra details of your own.
One idea would be to draw a background, and if you went for that idea then what kind of setting would you put her in?
Step 6 – Finish off your Athena drawing with color
Now you’re at the final step of your Athena drawing, and you’re ready to finish it off with some colors.
In our reference image, we showed you just one way that you could go about coloring this picture.
We used golden yellows for her hair while balancing it off with browns for her helmet and blue for her tunic.
There are many different colors that you could go for instead, however, and this is your chance to express your creativity!

If you find yourself getting lost in these details, don’t be afraid to simplify them a bit. The hair and feather details would be a good place to start, as these have some of the most intricate details.
These details could be simplified or removed entirely depending on how much they are giving you trouble. You could do this by using more solid shapes for these parts with minimal details.
The style used for this Athena drawing is very detailed and specific, and you could potentially make it easier by using a different style for the image. This would depend on the art styles you find easiest.
For instance, you may find a simple cartoon style to be the easiest one. So then you could use that for this drawing. In doing so, you could keep the basic pose and design but then adapt it to your chosen style.
Not only could this make it easier for you to draw, but it could also result in a more unique drawing that suits your tastes!
Finally, even though this Athena sketch is quite imaginative, you can use real people to make creating this drawing much easier. This could be done in a number of ways.
One would be to use yourself or someone you know as a model stand in. If you were to do this, then you would be best off finding someone who looks at least relatively similar to the Athena design.
Even if they are not a close match, it will still help when drawing the facial proportions and details! Another option would be looking up pictures of people posing online.
