The nose is a part of our faces that sometimes gets overlooked. Our facial expressions are dictated more by our eyes and mouths, so those will tend to be what catch the eye first.
Noses are very important, not just for breathing and smelling but because our faces look rather strange without them.
They can also be quite difficult to draw, whether you’re drawing them in a realistic style or a cartoony one.
Learning how to draw an anime nose can also be difficult, and this is especially true because there can be so many different interpretations in this kind of animation.
Learning how to draw every kind of anime nose in existence would be impossible, but by learning how to draw a basic one you can adapt it to any other style that you need.
That’s what we’re aiming to do in this guide, as we will show you how to draw a basic nose. Once you have mastered the basics of this design, you will be able to adapt it to any style you need.
We will also go over a few ways that you can customize and adapt the drawing while also covering a few ways that you could add some other elements as well.
So let’s dive in and check out the first of six steps on creating this anime nose drawing.
How to Draw An Anime Nose – Let’s get Started!
Step 1
As you have probably noticed in real life, noses come in all manner of shapes and sizes. Some are large and noticeable while others are small and petite.
The nose that we are drawing in this guide is on the smaller size, but you will be able to change a few details to recreate any kind of nose you like later on in the guide.
You will see in some of the later pictures how the nose will look at the end, so try to keep that in mind as we draw.
If you want to prepare for this drawing, then you could draw a rough version with some light pencils.
Not only can you practice drawing the nose this way, but you could also draw the rough shape of the rest of the head if you’re planning on drawing a full character later on.
With all that out of the way, we can draw the first line of this drawing. This first one should be rather easy for you to do, as it is a simple vertical line.
While it looks super simple, it’s important to try and get it to look like our example. If you get the angle off, it may look a bit weird later on.
There is a very gentle curve for the bridge of the nose and then a sharper curve for the tip of the nose. That’s all there is to it for this step, and then we can move on to the second part.
Step 2: Draw the first nostril cover
In this second step, we will be drawing the first nostril cover for this nose.
It is a very simple process, as all you need to do is draw a simple curved line on the left side of the line that you drew in the first step.
In our example, you will see that it is quite close to the bridge of the nose, but you can play around with this when you draw your own one.
If you look at some real noses on real people, you will see that nostrils can be quite varied. The same is true in anime, so you can also look at some of your favorite characters and see how these details differ.
Some anime noses will just have a line for the bridge of the nose whereas some will just have a small diagonal line.
It’s up to you to decide, but the nose that we’re creating in this guide is a little more detailed than some anime noses.
When you’re happy with how this first nostril looks, we can draw the next one in the following step. It’s also worth noting that we won’t be drawing the hole for the nostril yet, as that will come later.
Let’s move on to that third step when you’re ready!
Step 3: Draw the second nostril cover for the nose
In this third step, we will add the second nostril cover for your drawing of an anime nose. This one will look almost identical to the previous one, but it will be a mirror image of that one.
It should be on more or less the same level as the first one, but in our design it is ever so slightly higher on the image, almost imperceptibly so.
This is something that you don’t have to get exactly the same as ours, just try to make sure it’s more or less on the same level and the same size as the first one if you want the nose to look symmetrical.
If you went with a different kind of nostril shape to make your own unique anime nose design, then the idea will still be the same.
The one on the right should be more or less a mirror image of the one on the left.
This will be true no matter what the shape of the nostrils may be or what style they are drawn in.
Remember, you can also add some extra details such as nose rings, warts and other distinguishing features if you want to make it more unique.
We will go over a few ways that you can add your own details and ideas in more detail later on in the guide, so stay tuned for those!
For now, we will add the first nostril hole in the next step of the guide.
Step 4: Now add the first nostril hole
It may seem like the easiest part of a nose to draw, but many people stumble when it comes to the actual nostril hole.
It can be easy to draw them in the wrong place or make them too big or maybe too small.
At some angles, the nostril hole may not even be visible, but if you’re following the angle in our guide then they will be just visible.
We will draw one at a time to make placing and drawing them easier to get right.
When drawing a nostril, you may be tempted to draw a circle or an oval. While that may work for some nose styles, it’s not what we’re doing for this particular anime nose.
Instead, it will look a bit like a letter C that has been stretched a bit like a rubber band and put on its side, as you will see in the reference image. It will go quite close to the tip of the nose and will be at a bit of an angle.
It may seem simple, but it can be surprisingly tricky to get just right! When you have this first nostril, we will move on to step 5 where we will add the final nostril and any additional details and ideas you may have.
Step 5: Draw the final details of this anime nose
You’re almost ready to add some color to your drawing, but we have a few final touches to add before that!
Not only will we finish the drawing, but we will also go through a few ideas that can make this drawing even better.
For now, let’s draw that final nostril. You’ve done it once before, and this second one should be more or less the same, just in the opposite direction.
As you will see in our reference image, there are a few subtle differences between this nostril and the first one.
For starters, it is ever so slightly longer than the first one, as it is closer to us as the viewer.
These kinds of touches are subtle, but they help to build up a more accurate sense of proportion.
With that second nostril done, you’re ready to add some color in the final step of this guide on how to draw an anime nose!
You don’t have to move on just yet, however. One way to really complete this drawing would be to draw the rest of the face that this nose is attached to.
If you’re to do this, you have a few options. You could use an existing anime character that has a similar nose design, or you could draw a unique character.
If you go for the second option, you could use your own face or the face of someone you know and adapt your chosen subject to an anime style!
Don’t forget that you can also add things like noserings, warts, beauty marks or anything you would see on a real face when drawing this nose.
Then, we can add some color in the final step!
Step 6: Now, finish off this anime nose with some color
Who doesn’t like some coloring fun? It’s always great to relax with your favorite art tools and mediums, and it’s something that you can get really creative with.
In our example image, we show you just one of many ways that you can color this nose. We went with a basic lighter skin tone, but you’ll notice that we didn’t just stick to one color.
Instead, we used the basic colors and added different tones. Darker versions of the skin tone around the nose add some shading and realism to the design.
This trick could be used no matter what kind of skin tone you choose for the nose. Lighter spots can also replicate the look of light shining on the nose.
If you added any additional elements to the drawing, then you could use similar tricks for the rest of the face.
You will notice that there is a logic behind it, as areas where light is hitting the nose will be brighter.
If you draw an entire face, try to picture where the light sources will be and then work with that. It can also be fun to use art tools and mediums that you’re not as familiar with when coloring.
Older anime movies and shows have colors that look like they could be done with paint and even watercolors, so you could use mediums such as those for a more classic look.
Which of your favorite art tools and coloring mediums will you choose to color in this anime nose?
Bonus: Take This Drawing Even Further With These Suggestions!
You have completed this guide on how to draw an anime nose. Or have you? Just because you reached the end of the guide, doesn’t mean that you need to consider it finished.
There is still plenty of fun to be had, so we have a few more ideas you can try before calling it a day. The drawing of an anime nose that we created in this guide was fairly simple.
This was by design, as we wanted to make it easy to master so that you could get a feel for it. Now that you have mastered the drawing, you could make some variations.
In real life, noses come in all manner of different shapes, sizes and types. In the same way, we see this variety represented in anime stories.
Some people think of anime as one large style, but there are actually many styles within it. In this regard, we have seen many different portrayals of noses throughout anime history.
If you have some favorite anime characters with distinctive noses, then it could be fun to portray them here. If not, then try to think of the different kinds of noses you see every day.
You could use your friends and family as inspiration, in order to get some inspiration for how you can draw them. They could be big, small or exaggerated as you like.
Once you have these different noses, it could be fun to add the rest of the face. Accessories such as nose rings would also be a great addition, as they can add a lot of personality to the picture.
