There are many different utensils that we use every day when eating, and it can be easy to take them for granted!
We use them every day, but we may not always take a closer look at their design, and there is surprising complexity to behold when you do.
This guide on how to draw a cartoon knife will show you how to recreate this sharp utensil!
The steps in this guide will show you that even the toughest parts of a drawing can be made much easier when you break it down.
So without any delay, let’s keep your art skills sharp as we begin this step-by-step guide on how to draw a cartoon knife in just 6 easy steps!
How to Draw A Cartoon Knife – Let’s get Started!
Step 1
We will keep things simple for this first step of our guide on how to draw a cartoon knife!
We will begin by drawing the handle for the knife, and as with many knife handles it will be quite simple and efficient. After all, the handle is hardly the most flashy part of a knife!
In order to draw this handle, you will be drawing a rounded rectangle shape. It will be relatively short and won’t have anything in the way of details for now.
We will add some as we move to the next few steps though, so when you’re ready we shall proceed!
Step 2 – Draw some details for the handle
In the previous step, we mentioned that we would be adding some details to the handle, and we will make good on that promise in this second step!
First, we will draw a simple oval shape at the base of the handle. Then, we will draw a curved line near the right-hand edge of the handle.
To finish off this step, we will draw the two screws holding the parts of the handle together. These are simple circles that each have a straight line going through the middle.
That’s all there is to it, and then we can move on!
Step 3 – Now, draw the blade of the knife
We will leave the handle now as we focus on the star of this cartoon knife drawing, the blade! For now, we will keep things simple.
You could use a ruler for this step to make things easier on yourself, as we will be drawing a straight line.
This line will extend from the upper edge of the handle, and it will be a bit longer than the handle itself.
Then, we will add some more details to the blade as we proceed!
Step 4 – Draw the rest of the blade outline
This blade needs a sharp edge to be of any use, so we will finish off the outline in this step! To do this, we will be using the straight edge that you began in the previous part of the guide.
From the end of that straight line, draw a gradually curving line coming down from it. At the base, it will move in towards the handle to create another straight edge.
Finally, we will add another curved line coming up from the inner base of the blade and up towards the tip.
Once this outline is done, we will be ready to fill in the final details in the next step of the guide, so let’s go!
Step 5 – Now, you can add the final blade details
It’s almost time to finish off this guide on how to draw a cartoon knife with some colors, but we have a few final touches to add.
You will be able to add some additional elements of your own as well, but first let’s finish off the last details.
We are aiming to make this knife nice and shiny, and we will do this using some simple straight, diagonal lines along the surface of the blade.
Once this is done, you can add those extra details we mentioned! One fun idea would be to draw a background.
You could maybe put this knife in a kitchen setting with other utensils or even show what you may be cutting with this knife.
How do you think you will finish off this drawing? We can’t wait to see!
Step 6 – Finish off your drawing with some color
You’re now ready to bring this drawing to life with some colors! As you can see in our reference image, we went with some simple colors for this knife.
Even though the approach was a bit more muted and realistic, there are still some great details to take note of.
We used different shades of light and darker browns for the wooden handle, and this helps to create some shading.
We also used various shades of greys on the blade to make the metal look more realistic and shiny.
These are the colors we chose, but now you get to show off what colors you think this knife should be!
You could also play around with your favorite art tools and mediums to make the colors look even better.
You’re in charge now, so what colors and mediums will you choose to finish off this cartoon knife?
Here’s how you can make your cartoon knife drawing even better…
Let’s cut to the chase as we make this cartoon knife sketch even better!
Knives can come in many forms, and by changing a few details you could make this one we have drawn look quite different. When changing elements, the handle and blade will be the focus.
For example, you could make the handle a black plastic one instead of the wood handle we drew.
The blade could be longer and thinner or more squared, for a few more examples.
How else could you customize this drawing of a cartoon knife?
When using a knife, you will usually want to have other pieces of cutlery as well. Forks and spoons would be some examples, and these could be added to this artwork.
When adding more pieces of cutlery, you could look through the drawer of your own kitchen for inspiration. By using these real pieces, it should be much easier to add them to your drawing.
What are some pieces of cutlery you could add to the image?
Next, you will need something for this cartoon knife drawing to cut. This is another idea where you would have many options to choose from!
For example, the cartoon knife could be cutting through some cheese or maybe a loaf of bread. You could also draw some fish or maybe a big steak.
The possibilities are endless, so why not start by thinking of some of your favorite kinds of food? It would be interesting to see what you choose for this cartoon knife to cut.
Finally, once you have added any extra elements you like, you could then finish off with a background. The most obvious one to go for would be a kitchen setting.
Once again, you could use the kitchen in your own house as inspiration for the background. A kitchen is not the only setting you could use, however!
Maybe you would want to use a restaurant or a living room for your background instead. What other backgrounds can you think of?
