There are many different bird species in our world. Some are quite rare ones that you’re unlikely to see in your day-to-day life.
Others can be more common, so common that they could be taken for granted. The gentle pigeon is a bird that many of us see every day, and while we may not pay much mind to them they are actually quite pretty little birds.
For that reason, it can be a fun time to sit down and learn how to draw a pigeon.
This is the guide to be on if you would like to learn how to do it.
We hope you have a great time working with us on this guide on how to draw a pigeon!
How to Draw A Pigeon – Let’s get Started!
Step 1
To begin this guide on how to draw a pigeon, we will be starting with the head and the neck of the bird. First, let’s start with the head.
We will be drawing it with some curved and rounded lines to create the outline for it. Then you can use some straighter lines for the beak of the pigeon.
The beak will also have a small round shape at the top of it.
Once you have the head drawn, you can then extend some more curved lines down for the shape of the neck and back, and then add a stripe to the neck.
When you have replicated the lines in this step, you are then ready to proceed to step 2!
Step 2 – Next, draw the eye and legs
We will be adding some more parts to your pigeon drawing in this second step. First, you can start by drawing a small circle for the eye of the pigeon. Then you can add a small dot to that circle for the pupil of the eye.
With the eye taken care of, we will then draw the legs of the pigeon, and these will have a feathery portion on top. This step will then be concluded with some more curved lines for the back leading to the tail.
Step 3 – Now, draw the wing of the pigeon
Pigeons wouldn’t get very far without wings, so let’s draw one in this step of our guide on how to draw a pigeon.
The wing will be drawn with a long, slightly curved line inside the body outline.
Once you have the outline of the wing, you can then make it look more realistic by adding some smaller curved lines onto it for the feather details.
That’s all there is to it for now, so let’s keep adding some details and elements in the next few steps.
Step 4 – Next, draw some more feather details for the wing
This part of your pigeon drawing will see you adding some more feather details to the wing of the pigeon.
To do this, we will be adding more of those smaller curved lines that you added in the previous step, but they will be shaped a bit differently than those ones.
That will finish off the details for the wings, and in the upcoming step we will add some final details and extra elements to finish off before you color in your pigeon!
Step 5 – Now, finish off your pigeon drawing
It’s almost time to color in your picture, but first we have some final details to add in this step of our guide on how to draw a pigeon.
First, let’s start by finishing off the outline of the pigeon’s body by finishing off the line at the bottom of the pigeon.
Then, you can draw another section of tail feathers extending from the end of the tail. Once you have added that, you can then finish off with some final details before moving on.
The last details that we have in this guide are some lines across the legs and feet of the pigeon for some texture detail. That will finish off the details in this guide, but you don’t have to stop there!
You can finish off this step by adding some details and elements of your own, and there are lots of ideas you could go for.
Some ideas could be drawing some more pigeons or even draw yourself feeding some breadcrumbs to the pigeon. These are just a few ideas you could go for, but what else can you think of to complete the drawing?
Step 6 – Finish off your pigeon drawing with some color
Pigeons are known to have a more muted color scheme, and that’s what we went for in our example image.
Even if you go for these darker greys and blues, there are ways that you could incorporate brighter colors to your pigeon drawing!
If you drew any extra details or elements, then that could be a great way to bring more color to it. Coloring any background details you may have drawn would work great for that as well.
You could also go for a more stylistic look and use your favorite bright colors for the pigeon instead! Then you can also have fun trying out various art mediums to bring the colors to life.
You could use vibrant ones like acrylic and colored pencils or keep it lighter with ones like watercolors and colored pencils.
What colors and art mediums do you think would best suit this pigeon drawing?

Check out these 3 tips we have for making your pigeon sketch even easier!
When it comes to drawing, the art style you choose can make a big difference. For this drawing of a pigeon, we went with a detailed and realistic portrayal, but this could prove to be difficult for you.
If this is a style you find challenging, then you could try to change the art style or alter it. One option would be to use a simpler cartoony style, and this could also be made to make it more expressive.
Another would be to stick with the style we used in the guide but alter or remove some of the details that are giving you a problem.
This tip is great not only for making it easier but also if you want to create a more personalized picture.
By using a pencil, you can also make this pigeon drawing much easier. First, start by looking closely at our example image and try to break it down into simpler shapes.
See how the head, neck, body, wings and other parts connect to one another and then see how they can be drawn as simpler shapes.
Once you have these laid out, you can then start adding finer layers of details.
Once you have these finer details, you can then finish off with your final pen lines and erase your pencil lines.
Perhaps the best way to make this pigeon sketch easier would be to look at some real pigeons.
Pigeons are really common in many parts of the world, so if you take a walk then you may even encounter some real ones!
Otherwise, you could look some up online to get some help with your drawing.
The pictures you find may not be an ideal match for the one in our guide, but they can still help as you draw smaller details.
If you want to show the pigeon in a different pose, perhaps a flying one, then consulting other sources would also be a great idea.
