How to Draw a Dog – Let’s get Started!
The first step to creating your dog drawing is to use your pencil to draw in two circles intersecting with each other as shown in the image.
You can use a drawing compass to make sure the circles are perfect if drawing a circle freehand is proving difficult.
You could even use a small circular object you may have lying around to trace around if you don’t have a compass!
Once you’ve drawn in the two circles, carefully trace in the outline of the face as it appears in the reference image using a pen or darker pencil. The two circles you drew will guide you as you draw in the outline.
Step 2 – Finish the face outline
Once you’re happy with the outline of the face, carefully erase the guiding circles you drew in step 1.
If you used a pen for the outline, make sure the ink is dry before you start erasing!
Step 3 – Next, draw the dog’s ears
The next step for your dog drawing is to draw in the ears on the face outline you’ve drawn already.
You could use the ear shape in the image as a reference or change it a bit for your own variation.
If you need some guidance, you could use a light pencil to draw in some rough ears and then go over it when you’re happy with them.
Step 4 – Now draw the dog’s body
For the next step in the process of learning how to draw a dog, we’ll be adding the body of the dog.
You should start by drawing in two curved lines coming down from the sides of the face to form the outline of the body. Be sure to use the picture in the image as a reference!
Once you’ve drawn in the body outline, carefully draw in the legs as they appear in the reference picture.
Don’t forget to add in the small lines that show the dog’s toes. For this step it would help a lot to draw the body in with a light pencil and then go over it when you’re satisfied.
Step 5 – Next you will be adding the back legs
Your dog drawing needs some back legs, and we’ll be adding them in this fifth step. You can draw in the outline of the leg by adding a curved line from near the top of the body and down to just above the front feet.
Draw in another curved line under it with smaller lines for the toes to finish off the leg.
Simply repeat this process on the other side to have both legs ready to go!
Step 6 – Add in the final details
Our dog drawing is almost complete now, so we just have to add in some finer details. Firstly, draw in a thick circle with another inside it to make an eye.
Do the same a little further away from it to make the second one! If you’re finding that step difficult, then you could use a solid dot for the eyes or another simpler variation.
Next, draw in the nose using two lines and add two more curved lines beneath it to make the mouth of the dog.
Lastly, you can add in some details like a spot on the back and the tail as you can see in the dog drawing reference picture.
Step 7 – Finish off with some color
With these details added in, your dog drawing is almost complete! The only thing left to do is bring your new dog friend to life with some beautiful colors.
This is your chance to show us your art skills with how you choose to color in this cute dog. You could replicate the colors we used in our example or use your own favorite colors to personalize it even more.
There are no wrong answers for this step, and you should go with whichever colors make you happy and feels right for your dog drawing.
You could even use different art mediums such as acrylic, watercolor paints or colored pens for some bright and vibrant colors!
Which colors do you think you will use to finish off your drawing? If you have your own dog or have a favorite dog, maybe you could replicate their colors for this drawing!
