While I have stuck to a classic design of an alien, you have the freedom to add your own details and ideas once you have mastered the basics. Then, you can take it even further by adding a background, some accessories and other things an alien could use!

So let’s take off and see how it is done.

How to Draw An Alien – Let’s Get Started!

Step 1

alien drawing step 1
We will be drawing a big, round head for the alien in this guide on how to draw an alien. To do this, we will be drawing a big, rounded shape with a very small base.

The shape of the head should almost look a bit like a balloon in its shape. Be sure to leave a small gap at the bottom of this shape, as that is where the body will be connecting to the head soon.

Step 2 – Draw the top of the body

alien drawing step 2
For this part of your alien drawing, we will be drawing the shoulders of your alien.

This should be quite a simple step, as all you need to do is draw two slightly curved lines coming directly down from the head. That’s all there is to it and you’re ready for step 3!

Step 3 – Next, draw the first arm and body of your alien

alien drawing step 3
To draw the arm that is on our right, you can extend the line straight down from the shoulder that you drew in the previous step of your alien drawing.

The arm will be very thin and also have three fingers on it. Once you have drawn the arm hanging down at the alien’s side, you can draw another curved line going up towards the armpit of the alien.

Finally, draw the other side of the alien’s body by drawing another curved line.

Step 4 – Now draw another arm for your alien

alien drawing step 4
The other arm of the alien will be raised a bit, unlike the previous arm which was hanging at the alien’s side.

Simply draw the arm out directly from the shoulder on our left to add this arm. If you wanted, you could have it higher up, perhaps as a friendly wave or to have it holding a less friendly space raygun!

Step 5 – Draw some legs for your alien

alien drawing step 5
Your alien pal needs some legs to stand on, so let’s add them in this step of our guide on how to draw an alien!

To add these legs, simply draw a line coming down from each side of the bottom of the alien’s body.

Then, draw a line between them to make the gap between the legs, and then finally draw some rounded feet on the ends of the legs.

You could also change the design of the legs and feet a bit if you prefer! Perhaps the feet could have some big long toes for an extra fun detail

Step 6 – Now, draw a face for your alien

alien drawing step 6
Before we move on to picking some colors for your alien drawing, we will be adding a face to it in this step!

This is another step where you could change things up a bit if you want a different look for the face or would prefer a different facial expression.

If you’re following our design, then use two rounded shapes with sharp points at the corners for the eyes. Then, simply use two dots for the nose.

You can finish off by using a curved line for a smiling mouth beneath the nostrils.

This is the design we chose for the drawing, but if you have an idea for a weird and wacky alien face design then definitely go ahead and draw it so we can see!

You could also add any fun extra details that you would like to really put your own spin on this drawing.

Perhaps you could draw a space suit onto your alien, or maybe give us a glimpse at what you think the alien world this guy is from would look like!

Step 7 – Finish off your alien drawing with some color

alien drawing step 7
No one has ever seen an alien in real life (that we know of) so that means that when imagining what an alien might look like there’s room for a lot of imagination.

This is a step where you should really let your creativity run wild and show us what you can do!

Anything goes when it comes to colors for this image. You could go for something incredibly bright and vibrant along with some crazy patterns for one approach.

Alternatively, you could just as easily use some darker and more muted colors for a different effect.

You can also have some fun with the mediums you use. For this image, it might be fun to use some different mediums together!

Maybe you could use some acrylic paints and colored pens for the alien, yet use some watercolors and crayons for the background.

This is just one of many options at your disposal, so how will you color in your picture?
