How to Draw A Cartoon Lizard – Let’s Get Started!
Step 1
Even though we will be working on a cartoon portrayal in this guide on how to draw a cartoon lizard, the proportions will still be fairly accurate to the real thing.
This will be true for the head shape, which we will begin now. The head is fairly small and rounded, and the mouth is going to extend inside the head to form a wide smile.
Its top lip will be slightly pointy, but will still be a bit curved and rounded. Finish off by adding a small rounded line on top of the head for the eyelid, and then we will add the bottom of the mouth.
Step 2 – Start drawing the body for this cartoon lizard
The head outline is done, and now we can start drawing the body for the lizard. First, we will draw the back of the lizard.
This will extend back from the base of the head, and it will be rather curved. Then, we will start the underside of the lizard’s neck.
You can draw this by adding two short, curved lines coming from the bottom base of the head. Once you have drawn these aspects as they appear in our reference image, we will move on to step 3.
Step 3 – Draw a leg and more of the belly
Now we will add a leg and more of the belly to your cartoon lizard drawing. Let’s start with the leg.
This will go directly where the lines of the underside of the neck that you drew in the previous step ended.
It will be thicker at the base and get slightly thicker the further you move along.
The feet of have a very distinctive shape, and the toes will be quite rounded at the end to show the suction sections.
Then, extend the lines from the underside of the neck past the leg to keep the belly going.
Step 4 – Now, draw some more legs
We will continue adding some legs to the lizard in this next step. These legs will poke out at the top and the bottom of the body, as shown in the reference image.
For the one on top, we will mostly see just the foot. This one will be shaped like the foot on the first leg with the same rounded toes.
For the other leg, it will go at the bottom of the body, and it will be a lot more curved and rounded than the front leg. That’s all there it to it for now, and then we can proceed!
Step 5 – Draw another leg and start the tail
Before we start adding any extra details, we have one more leg to add to your cartoon lizard drawing.
The foot on this one will be a bit more stretched out than the previous ones, so the toes will be longer and thinner.
Then, we will finish off this step by extending the tail further along using some slightly curved lines.
There will be a gap at the end of the tail, and we will fill that in along with any final details in the next step.
Step 6 – Now, add the final details
It’s time to finish off this drawing before we get to the final step of the guide! First, we will add an eye for the lizard.
The eye outline will be large and rounded, and there will be an oval with a dot inside for the pupil. Then, we will add some curved eyebrows above the head to finish off the facial expression.
The last thing to add will be the end of the tail, and it will be curved into a spiral shape. Once this has been added, we will be ready for the final step!
You can also add any additional details or background elements you may like as well before you do.
Step 7 – Finish off your drawing with some color
We will close off this guide on how to draw a cartoon lizard with some colors to really bring it to life!
In our reference image, we went with various shades of green for the lizard to give it a beautiful bright look, and you could go for similar colors if you like how they look!
This is completely up to you, though, and you should feel free to use any colors you like.
By changing up and experimenting with your art tools and mediums, you can also make the colors as bright or subdued as you want them to be!
The possibilities are endless, so how will you finish it off?
