There are many different species of dinosaurs that existed millions of years ago. Some of these dinosaurs were small, some were massive and all had their own unique looks and attributes.
The spinosaurus falls somewhere in the middle when it comes to size, but they still had a rather unique look to them thanks to the large fin on their backs.
Because they look so unique, learning how to draw a spinosaurus can be a bit tricky!
If you would like to discover how easy and fun it can be, however, then read on!
This step-by-step guide on how to draw a spinosaurus will show you everything you need to know when drawing this incredible dinosaur.
How to Draw A Spinosaurus – Let’s get Started!
Step 1
The first step of this guide on how to draw a spinosaurus will be started by drawing the outline of the head.
The head of the spinosaurus is quite long and thin, and for that reason, we will be using some straighter and more angular lines for it.
We will also be using some rounded lines for the eye of the spinosaurus as well as adding some line details for the nose and facial features.
Step 2 – Next, draw in the neck and start the fin for the spinosaurus
With the head outline done, we will start with the neck as well as the famous back fin of your spinosaurus drawing.
First, draw a sharply curved line coming down from the head. You can then add some lines to it for some pattern details.
Once you have the neck drawn, we will start with the fin on the back. The outline will be drawn with some pointy lines, and then some straight lines will be extended up from the base of it, as shown in the reference image. Then it’s on to step 3!
Step 3 – Now, draw the tail and continue the neck
In this step of our guide on how to draw a spinosaurus, we will be continuing the neck as well as drawing the tail for the dinosaur.
First, for the tail you can use some bumpy lines for the top of it. Then the bottom will be drawn with some more curved lines that twist around.
Finally, we will add some wavy lines to the neck for some more detail there.
Step 4 – Next, start drawing the body details
Your spinosaurus drawing may get a bit trickier from this point onward, but as long as you take it slowly and follow the reference guide closely then you should have no problems!
With that in mind, we will be adding some curved and straight lines for the skin and muscle definition for your drawing.
As you can see in the reference image, these will be going more at the center of the body for now, and we will add some more details in the next few steps.
Step 5 – Now, draw the start of the arms
The spinosaurus would walk upright with small arms, and we will start these arms in this step of our guide on how to draw a spinosaurus.
Using a combination of curved and angular lines, we can add the full arm bent on the right. It will also have some sharp claws at the end of them.
You can also start the second arm in this step, but we will finish that one off in the next step.
Step 6 – Next, draw the other arm and first leg
As promised, we will be finishing the second arm of your spinosaurus drawing in this step. It will be similarly structured to the previous one, however it will be at a bit of a different angle.
Then you can finish off this step by adding the first leg on the right, and it will have three sharp claws at the end.
Step 7 – Next, draw the other leg and final details
It’s time to finish up the final details in this step of our guide on how to draw a spinosaurus.
First, you can draw the second leg. It will be raised a bit to show that this dinosaur is on the move! Then you can finish off with some details on the legs and tail.
With these added, you’re ready for the final step! Be sure to add any new details or background elements that you may want for the picture as well.
By doing this, you could show off what kind of environment you think this spinosaurus would have inhabited. You could also draw some more of your favorite dinosaurs to go along with it!
We can’t wait to see how you put your own spin on this drawing.
Step 8 – Now finish it off with some color
Scientists can only guess at what colors dinosaurs may have been, so that gives you many options for coloring your spinosaurus drawing!
We used some reds and greys for our image, but you should use any colors that feel right for you. This is your chance to show what you think this dinosaur may have looked like!
You could go for bright colors, more muted ones or a combination of both. You could also play around ith various art mediums and tools to achieve the kinds of colors you would like for this awesome spinosaurus.
There are no wrong answers, so be sure to get creative and show us what you can do!
