One of the laws of nature is that no matter what animal you choose, if you can find the baby version of it, it will be cute!
Even animals that grow up to be horrifying like snakes and spiders are kind of cute when babies.
The same is true of babies that will become huge, such as baby elephants. Many people love these gigantic cuties, and they like to show it by learning how to draw a baby elephant.
This guide will show you how you can draw one of these lovable babies!
We really hope that you enjoy working on this step-by-step guide on how to draw a baby elephant with us!
How to Draw A Baby Elephant – Let’s get Started!
Step 1
For this first step of our guide on how to draw a baby elephant, we will start with the head of the elephant.
It may look quite detailed, but as long as you take it slowly and follow the reference image closely then you should have no problem with it! First, you will be using a rounded line for the top of the elephant’s head.
Then, moving down a bit you can use two curved lines that will go over the eyes later. Finally, you can draw the trunk reaching up with a smiling mouth beneath it.
That’s all there is to it for this step, and now you’re ready to proceed!
Step 2 – Draw the ears and then start the chest and legs
Elephants are known for many physical attributes, and one of these attributes is their big floppy ears. For that reason, we will be adding that aspect now for your baby elephant drawing!
To draw these ears, you will be using some curved lines to have them flopping down on the side of the head. Then, draw the bottom of the head before you start to draw the chest and fronts of the legs.
There will also be some minor details added to the face, as you can see in the reference image. These will help to make the baby elephant look even cuter!
You can then finish off this step by adding some hairs onto the head of the elephant.
Step 3 – Now, finish the facial details and the legs
This part of our guide on how to draw a baby elephant will be all about finishing up the eyes and front legs.
The main aspect of the face will be the eyes. They will be big and round, with large pupils inside colored black. These will also help to make the baby elephant look happy and cute!
Then, once you’re happy with how the face looks you can finish off the lines for the legs as they appear in the reference image.
The image will also show you how to angle the feet of the elephant so that it will look like it’s walking.
Step 4 – Next, draw the belly and back legs
Your baby elephant drawing is already looking great! For the next few steps we will be working on some final details before you start to color it in.
First, use a curved line for the belly of the elephant going back from the legs.
Then, use some more curved and rounded lines to begin the back legs that will also be positioned in such a way that the elephant will look like it’s walking.
Step 5 – Now, you can finish off the final details and elements
This fifth step of our guide on how to draw a baby elephant will be all about adding some final elements before you finish off with some color.
First, you can start by drawing a curved line for the back of the elephant. Then, loop this line down until it reaches the back legs. You can finish off by drawing the rest of the back legs as well as adding a tail to the back.
That will do it for the final details, but you don’t have to stop there! Before you move on, you can also add some details of your own.
Perhaps you could draw a background to show where this cute baby elephant is hanging out. What kind of setting do you think this cutie would be in?
Step 6 – Finish off your baby elephant drawing with some color
You’ve reached the final stage of your baby elephant drawing, and this is the step where you get to have lots of fun coloring in your amazing picture!
In our reference image, we used a nice grey for the elephant with some pink for the inner ears. This is just a suggestion, however, and you should feel free to use any colors that you love for this drawing!
Even if you choose to keep the colors for the elephant more muted and realistic, you can still incorporate some brighter colors elsewhere.
If you drew a background, you could work some lovely brighter colors into it for some variation.
Once you know what you would like to use to color in the picture, you can also have fun choosing what art tools and mediums you would like to use.
For brighter, more vibrant colors you could use some acrylic paints or colored pens for some examples. You could also go for more muted tones using something such as watercolors and colored pens to achieve that look.
Anything you use will look incredible, so what do you think you will choose for your baby elephant drawing to finish it off?
Here’s how you can make your baby elephant drawing even better…
Make this adorable baby elephant sketch even better with these fun and easy tips!
This cute drawing of a baby elephant is cute enough as is, but it would be even cuter if you added some more baby elephant friends for the little guy!
Now that you know how to draw a baby elephant, you could add as many friends to this picture as you wanted. How many baby elephants would you like to add to this elephant crew?
Once you have added all of the baby elephants you would like for the picture, you could take it even further by adding some adult elephants to the herd as well.
To do this, you could use the guide again and adjust it to create the adult elephants. You could also look up some images of real elephants and then use these pictures to help you create these adult additions.
What kinds of poses and scenarios would you like to put these elephants into?
When you’ve had enough of drawing elephants, you may want to add other kinds of animals to your baby elephant drawing. Even if you stuck to African wildlife, you would have hundreds of animals to choose from.
These could include famous animals like lions, leopards, rhinos and many more. You could also use animals from other parts of the world that you love!

Finally, adding a background would be a great way to complete this baby elephant sketch. Once again, you could use Africa as an inspiration for some amazing landscapes and environments.
