How to Draw Planets – Let’s Get Started!
Step 1
This guide on how to draw planets will require lots of circular shapes, so there are some drawing tools that you can use to make it easier!
The best tool that you can use would be a drawing compass. By using this tool with your favorite pen or pencil you can create effortless perfect circles.
If you don’t have a drawing compass handy, there are other things you can try. You could even use some flat, round objects to trace around and you can get some great results!
For this first step, you can draw a large circle and a much smaller one to the bottom right of it.
Step 2 – Draw some more circles
In this second part of your planets drawing, you can add some more planet outlines to the first ones you drew.
Using whichever method you came up with to draw circles, carefully draw two more medium-sized circles above the other ones that you drew previously.
That’s all there is to it for this step, and we’re ready to move on!
Step 3 – Now, draw one more planet for this solar system
We will be shaking things up a bit in this step of our guide on how to draw a planet. It will start off in the same way as the other planets did with a smaller circle.
The difference is that this planet will have a ring around it, as shown in the reference picture.
Step 4 – Add some details to the planets
Each planet has a unique look to it, making sure that no two planets are exactly alike.
For that reason, when we add some details to the planets in this drawing we will use a different pattern for each one.
The top left planet will have some jagged lines for its decoration. The top right and bottom left will have a more wavy design to them, whereas the final one will have some lines drawn to decorate it.
You could switch around these different designs between the planets or even come up with your own designs if you wish! How will you decorate this solar system of yours?
Step 5 – Now, you can finish off the final details of this planets drawing
This step of your planets drawing will be centered around the final details of the drawing before you finish it off with some colors in the final step.
In this step, you can draw some continent shapes into the central planet. These continents make it look like the Earth!
Then, once you have those details drawn you can also add some more small touches of your own. Some ideas could be drawing some stars around the planets, as we did in our reference image.
You could also add other objects such as asteroids, comets, other planets or even some alien spaceships!
There are lots of ways that you could put your own spin on this drawing, so you should really let your creativity run wild!
We can’t wait to see what you come up with to close off this planets drawing before coloring it in.
Step 6 – Finish off your planets drawing with some color
That brings us to the final step of this guide on how to draw planets! You’ve done an amazing job creating a solar system, and now you get to have some fun coloring in your picture!
In real life, planets can come in many different amazing colors and variations, so there is no limit to how you can color in this solar system.
We tried to use a different color scheme for each individual planet in our reference picture to really help them stand apart.
When you know which colors you would like to use for your drawing, you can also experiment with different art mediums.
There are some amazing color variations that you can get just by switching up the mediums that you use.
Acrylic paints and colored pens can be great for some wonderfully vibrant colors in an image. On the other hand, watercolor paints and colored pencils can be great for more muted colors.
One thing you could do is mix mediums a bit and use a different one for each planet to have even more diversity between them!
Another great way to create some more contrast would be to use a dark medium like acrylic paints to give this solar system a rich black background.
There are so many ways you can go about this step, so we can’t wait to see what you do!
