The process of learning how to draw a USA flag is easier than you thought when you follow this guide! Anyone can show their patriotism by following the steps I will soon lay out for you.
The American flag as we know it was adopted in 1777 after the Declaration of Independence came into effect. There have been some minor changes since then, but the iconic stars and stripes have been there from the start.
These days, it’s a sign of American patriotism and is one of the most recognizable flags in the world. Drawing this recognizable flag isn’t always as easy as you may think though.
This is especially true when you want to draw it as a physical object flowing on a flag. That’s why this guide won’t just show you how to draw a static flag but one that is flowing on a pole.
Once you have drawn it, you could draw a background behind it as well!
Create A USA Flag Drawing By Watching These Steps
How to Draw A USA Flag – Let’s Get Started!
Step 1
To begin this guide on how to draw a USA flag, we will be drawing the flagpole to begin with.
To draw the main part of this flagpole, you can use a drawing tool such as a ruler to create the straight edges of the pole.
Then, there will be a curved, pointy portion at the end poking out. Then, add a rounded line onto the side of the pole for the rope that is holding the flag onto the pole.
You’ll then be ready for the second step of the guide!
Step 2 – Now, draw the fabric of the flag
For the second part of this USA flag drawing, we will be drawing the fabric of the flag. Instead of drawing a simple rectangle shape for the flag, we went with a more dynamic approach.
We separated the flag into several rounded sections to make it look like it is made of flowing fabric.
You may want to try and closely copy the lines as they appear in our example image to get this effect looking right.
Once the flowing fabric of the flag has been drawn, we will then begin to add some finer details to the flag in the next few steps.
Step 3 – Draw the stars onto the flag
This flag is sometimes nicknamed the stars and stripes, and in this step of our guide on how to draw a USA flag, the reasoning for this will become rather clear!
We will be drawing the stars onto the flag in this step, and this part could take a bit of patience. The flag has 50 stars to represent the 50 States.
The way this flag is folded will hide some of these stars, but you could squeeze a few more in if you would like to represent all 50.
Once the stars are drawn, we can begin working on the stripey portion in the next step of the guide.
Step 4 – Next, start drawing the stripes
As we mentioned in the previous step of this USA flag drawing, we will begin adding the stripes in this next step. Because the flag is flowing, these stripes won’t be drawn straight onto the flag.
Instead, they will be drawn using curved, wavy lines that take the flowing of the flag into account. For now, we will be filling in the first section of the flag along with the top of the middle section.
You’ll notice the bottom of this section along with the final one are blank, but we will fill these sections in the next step of the guide.
Step 5 – Add the final details to your USA flag drawing
Now you’re ready to finish off this picture with some final details in this step of our guide on how to draw a USA flag!
To finish it off, we will be filling in the final empty spaces with some horizontal lines. Again, we will be following the way that the fabric is flowing when adding these lines.
This means that they will be rather wavy and curved depending on the orientation of the fabric.
When you have added these final stripes, you will then be able to add some final details and ideas of your own! One idea would be to draw a background.
In doing so, you can really create a wonderful patriotic-themed image by incorporating elements of the flag or other famous images related to the US.
What kinds of extra details can you think of to add?
Step 6 – Finish off your USA flag drawing with color
This is the final step of this USA flag drawing, and in it we shall finish off with some color.
The USA flag is famous for its color scheme of red, white and blue, and these colors have come to symbolize American patriotism in general.
That means it should come as no surprise that we went with this color scheme for this USA flag drawing.
The stripes of the flag alternate in white and red, and the background of the portion with stars on it is a lovely dark blue. We also used some darker shades of these colors to create some shading for the flag as well.
Will you go for these classic colors or maybe change things up a bit for a different interpretation?
Here’s how you can make your USA flag drawing even better…
Have some patriotic fun as we make your USA flag sketch even better!
The American flag is often associated with certain occasions such as Independence Day. You could represent this in your drawing of a USA flag!
One easy way of doing this would be to draw some fireworks exploding in the background. This could be done using any of your favorite art tools or mediums.
You could also write a message such as “happy 4th of July” or any other message you can think of. What other holidays or occasions could you associate the flag with?
Speaking of using art mediums, don’t be shy about using some interesting arts and crafts when coloring in your image.
For example, there are a few ways that you could make fireworks look incredible.
Using glitter or glitter glue would be a great way of doing this, for example. This would help to give the image some sparkle.
Using stickers, beads and even pieces of fabric would also work great for this purpose!
Another way to make this USA flag drawing look even better would be to add a background. This would be a great tip to pair with some of our previous ideas.
One way that you could do this would be to add an iconic American city behind the flag. For example, you could have the New York City skyline in the background.
If you took our previous suggestion of having a 4th of July celebration, then you could build a background scene out of that.
This USA flag sketch shows this iconic flag, but there are many other famous flags from around the world. You could show off some of your favorites by drawing them next to the USA flag!
To do this, you could use the same outline from the guide and then add the symbols, shapes and colors from your chosen flags.
This would be a great way to show off some of your favorite countries!
