It’s always a pleasure watching vibrant and colorful fireworks exploding into the sky, but we don’t see them as often as we want.
Why not learn how to draw fireworks instead? By drawing fireworks, you can look at it right inside your home anytime you want.
With the fireworks’ intricate features and complex color scheme, it may seem impossible to perfectly capture the beauty of fireworks onto a piece of paper.
In this step-by-step tutorial on how to draw fireworks, we’ll be drawing a sky rocket, one of the most popular types of fireworks. You might be surprised to discover that drawing fireworks is actually a lot easier than you think!

How to Draw Fireworks – Let’s get started!
Step 1
Starting on the upper portion of your paper, draw a triangular shape with a curved bottom line to create the tip of the sky rocket.
Make sure to draw the tip on the upper part of your paper to leave sufficient space for the bottom part of the fireworks.
In the entire process of drawing fireworks, we will be drawing a lot of straight lines. That means, you may need the help of a ruler to help you draw straight lines quickly and easily.
Step 2 – Outline the Shape of the Fireworks
Right underneath the triangle we drew in the previous step, draw a cylinder forming the charge of the fireworks.
Bear in mind that the upper part of the cylinder shape must be slightly wider than the bottom part, as shown in the illustration.
Step 3 – Draw the Fuse at the Bottom Part
Draw a thin, elongated line directly connected underneath the cylinder we drew previously. When drawn correctly, the fuse should look like a candle wick.
The fuse of the fireworks is made of a rolled piece of paper or fabric and it is where all the magic starts to happen.
Once the fuse is lit with fire, the spark goes upwards to the charge, making it set off up into the sky along with other small fuses that create the colorful explosion.
Step 4 – Add a Spark on the Tip of the Fuse
Create a spark on the end point of the fuse to make it look like it’s ignited with flame.
Simply draw connected curved lines forming an uneven circular shape. Make sure that the fume overlaps within the spark.
Step 5 – Create Patterns on the Fireworks
Firecrackers are typically covered with colorful and printed paper sheets, so make sure you add some patterns across the surface of your sky rocket.
To create the diagonal stripes design, as seen in the illustration, draw two parallel diagonal lines across the sky rocket’s body. This will form the first line of the pattern.
As you can see in the illustration, we kept the design on the sky rocket fireworks plain and simple. However, feel free to customize your fireworks and add whichever patterns you like!
If you will be creating a distinct design, skip the following steps and proceed to the 9th step to continue.
Step 6 – Keep Adding Designs on the Fireworks
Draw another two parallel diagonal lines right below the lines we drew in the previous step.
This creates the second line of the diagonal stripes pattern.
Step 7 – Add More Patterns and Designs
Create another diagonal stripe by drawing another two parallel diagonal lines below the previous ones.
At this point, you should now have three layers in your diagonal stripes pattern.
Step 8 – Complete the Sky Rocket’s Patterns
Repeat the previous step until the entire sky rocket is fully adorned with diagonal lines.
Make sure that all lines remain diagonal and parallel to each other.
After completing this step, the design on your sky rocket should now be completed.
Step 9 – Draw Lots of Stars in the Background
Draw several stars in various sizes all over the background surrounding the sky rocket.
This creates a dramatic illusion of an explosion, making your drawing appear more realistic.
Now that we have successfully drawn the fireworks, it’s finally time for the most enjoyable part, which is choosing the colors and coloring the fireworks.
As shown in the illustration, we colored the fireworks using the colors red and white, alternating on the patterns.
We also used a vibrant yellow for the stars surrounding the fireworks. To create a realistic-looking flame, we used a combination of orange and yellow.
Feel free to color the fireworks using any color you like. We’re excited to see which colors you will be using!

You could look up some images of real fireworks to give you some inspiration for your fireworks!
Fireworks are often associated with certain events and holidays, and you could represent one of these holidays in your fireworks drawing.
For example, fireworks will be very common around the Fourth of July. To show this, you could give this picture a patriotic feeling by adding some American flags to the scene.
What are some other occasions you would expect to see fireworks that you could represent in this picture?
Now that you have your fireworks drawn, you could add some extra elements to show how they would be set up in real life. Often there will be a small stick attached to the firework.
This will then be plunged into the ground so that the firework will be stable once it is lit. you could add a detail like that or even draw a background setting.
We can admire the unlit fireworks all day, but the main event is seeing them explode in the sky.
It could be fun to create a companion piece to your fireworks sketch by creating an artwork showing fireworks exploding in the sky.
To do this, we would recommend creating a black background, letting it dry and then adding some amazing colors and effects over it.
