How to Draw The Mexican Flag – Let’s Get Started!
Step 1
It would be easy to draw a rectangle for the outline as you learn how to draw the Mexican flag, but we’re going to be taking it a step further in this guide!
This flag will be flowing in the breeze, and while that can make it harder it will also make for a more dynamic image.
Start off by drawing a slightly curved vertical line for the left-hand edge of the flag. Then, add two short curved lines at the top of this flag.
Next, draw a long curved line at the bottom that is connected to another short one. We will then connect these portions with some curvy vertical lines.
The line at the base will also extend a bit further in a wavy line. This may sound a bit confusing, but it will become clearer as you closely refer to the reference image as you draw!
Step 2 – Next, draw the rest of the outline for the flag
This part of your Mexican flag drawing will see you finishing off the outline for the flag. To do this, we will be adding some more of the wavy rectangular vertical shapes that you have been drawing so far in this guide.
There will be three of these shapes that we will be adding in this part, and the third one will be smaller and a bit more rounded than the others.
Once you have replicated the shapes as seen in the reference image, we can start to draw the detailing on the flag.
Step 3 – Start drawing the line details on the flag
The flag we are drawing is separated into three color sections, so in this part of our guide on how to draw the Mexican flag we will start to draw these sections.
Ordinarily, it would be as simple as drawing two vertical lines on the flag but we will be taking the fact that the fabric is flowing into account as we draw.
With that in mind and refereeing to the reference image, we will be drawing some curved vertical lines onto the flag, curving them to suit the flow of the fabric.
This can get a little confusing, so make sure to follow the reference image closely to replicate how it looks.
Step 4 – Now, start drawing the symbol on the flag
One of the distinguishing features of the Mexican flag is the crest in the center of it. This crest is made up of a wreath with an eagle sitting above it.
For this part of your Mexican flag drawing we will focus on the wreath part. You can draw the leaves of this wreath by drawing some small round, pointy shapes forming a curved shape.
Once you have drawn this wreath, you will then be ready to finish off the design in the next step, so let’s proceed!
Step 5 – Finish off your Mexican flag drawing
We can complete the symbol of the flag in this step of our guide on how to draw the Mexican flag.
As we mentioned in the previous step, the symbol is composed of a wreath with an eagle above it, and we will be drawing that eagle in this fifth step.
This eagle is facing the left and has a bit of a stylized design to it. When drawing it for your own flag, you may want to enlarge the reference image to refer to as you recreate this aspect.
Once you have drawn this eagle, you have finished all of the details in this flag and are ready for some colors to finish it off!
Before you move on, you could also draw some details of your own. We mentioned earlier that there are many iconic aspects of Mexico, so perhaps you could draw a background featuring some of these aspects!

When you began this guide on how to draw a Mexican flag, you may have assumed it would be an easy drawing to take on. As you may have discovered, it can be harder than it looks.
If you found yourself getting to this point in the guide and unable to easily complete the drawing, we have a few tips. Persevering with a drawing and trying again is always admirable, but there is also no shame in changing the design.
For example, you will have noticed that we made the flag flowy in the drawing to make it look more dynamic. This looks really good, but it is also one of the aspects that could make it more difficult to draw.
It’s probably one of the first aspects you should consider changing if you’re having a hard time with this drawing. It could be a simplification where the folds of the flag are a little less pronounced.
Or, you could go more extreme and rather have the flag as a flat rectangle shape. You could draw the outline of this with your ruler and then add the details inside easily.
This would make for a less interesting image potentially, but it would still be a good representation of the flag. Also, it might help to do a version like this and then try the one in the guide again.
Doing this flatter version would allow you to get a better idea of the flag’s structure, and then you can take that knowledge to create the flowing flag instead.
These are just suggestions, but you could make any changes that would make the drawing easier and more enjoyable for you to create. Then, when you’re happy with it, we can move to the final step!
Step 6 – Finish off your Mexican flag drawing with some color
This final step of this Mexican flag drawing will see you finish it off with some amazing colors.
As we’ve mentioned, the Mexican flag has green on the left and red on the right with white in the center, but you can make these blocks of color more interesting by using various shades of each color.
Even the white section can be made more dynamic by adding some grey to that section.
There are loads of ways that you can express your creativity with the colors and art mediums you use, so have fun with it and see what happens!
