This was due to how imposing he was along with his awesome visual design. Many fans like to learn how to draw Darth Maul so they can create artworks featuring the Sith lord.
His design can be a bit difficult to replicate due to all the details, but that’s why this tutorial is here to help out!
Our step-by-step guide on how to draw Darth Maul in just 6 easy steps will show you how you can recreate this terrifying villain.
How to Draw Darth Maul – Let’s Get Started!
Step 1
In this guide on how to draw Darth Maul, we will be depicting a close-up of his head and face. To get this started, we will begin by drawing the outline of his head.
Darth Maul has quite a defined, angular face, and we will be representing that in this drawing.
Aspects such as his jaw, eyebrow and cheek outlines will be quite angular and pointy. We will also be adding his ear outline as well as the top of his collar.
The top of his head will have a blank space in it for now, but we will be filling that in soon!
Step 2 – Now, draw some horns and more of his collar
There are many iconic aspects to the Darth Maul design, but one of the most notable ones are the horns that sit atop his head.
We will add the first of these horns to your Darth Maul drawing in this step, and we will also draw some more of his collar.
The horn on the left will be drawn using a curved line that has a pointy tip at the end.
The horn on the right-hand side will look similar, but it will also have a rounded rim at the base of it.
You can then finish off this step by drawing some twisty details inside of his ear, and then add a section to his collar.
Then it will be time to move on to step 3!
Step 3 – Draw some more horns and smaller details
You’ve already added two horns so far in this guide on how to draw Darth Maul, and we will be adding four more in this step.
The two closest to us as the viewer will also have some rims at the bases, and they will be even larger and more angular than the previous ones.
The one on the right will be obscured a bit by this larger horn, and we won’t see the base of the one on the left. We will then be drawing some more horns and facial details in the next step of the guide.
Step 4 – Next, draw some more horns and facial details
This step of your Darth Maul drawing will have you finishing off the final horns while also starting the facial details.
At two more large horns near the front of the top of his head, and then you can draw the tips of smaller ones poking up from the back of his head.
Then, use some curved lines for his angry eyebrows, and then add his eyes below them.
Finally, use some simple lines for his nose and mouth, and then we can move on to the final details in the next step.
Step 5 – Add the final details to your Darth Maul drawing
This character is well known for the complex and detailed visual design on his face, and this design will make this step of our guide on how to draw Darth Maul a bit trickier!
As long as you take it slow you’ll be able to get it done in no time, however. When working on his face markings, you’ll want to follow our example image very closely.

Do this to take your Darth Maul drawing to the next level
Make this intimidating villain even better with these tips for your Darth Maul sketch!
The drawing of Darth Maul that we created in this guide shows just his head and a bit of his shoulders. You could add to the drawing in order to show some more of his body.
To do this, you could freeze a frame from the Phantom Menace film or one of his TV show incarnations.
Or, you might want to search some images of Darth Maul online to help you as you draw.
The only question remaining is what pose would you choose for this fearsome Sith lord?
In the first tip, we mentioned that there have been many different portrayals of Darth Maul in media.
If you wanted to give this drawing a different feel, you could alter details to match one of those portrayals.
In some, he looks older and more world-weary, as these show him many years after his first film appearance. It would be interesting to recreate these looks by changing a few details!
One of the aspects that is most intrinsic to the character of Darth Maul would be his iconic dual-blade lightsaber. This would be a great feature to add to this Darth Maul drawing!
If you decided not to add more of his body to the drawing, you could show just a portion of the laser blade. If you did decide to draw his whole body, then you could show the entire iconic weapon.
Finally, once you are happy with your Darth Maul sketch you could finish it off with a background. The Star Wars series is filled with many incredible planets and locations, so you would have many to choose from.
First, you could depict a location that he himself has appeared in throughout the films and TV shows. Or, you could pick a planet or location he has never been seen in to imagine a new adventure.
